Key ideas of the political Left: progressive society, socialist economics, egalitarianism.
Key ideas of the political Right: conservative society, capitalist economics, pragmatism.
But wait, apparently racism and nationalism are right-wing as well. So is authoritarianism. And fascism. And misogyny.
On the other hand, environmentalism is left-wing. As is liberalism/libertarianism. And feminism. And democracy.
Wow, when lumped with all those nasty things, no wonder the political right is seen as nasty.
What about those of us who believe in conservative, capitalist, pragmatic approaches to public policy, as well as environmentalism, liberty, equality, and democracy, but rejects all the nasty elements listed above? Are we still right-wing? Are we all also nasty bigots?
According to this modern narrative, National Socialism is right-wing despite being socialist. And since Communism is authoritarian and nationalist, does that make it right-wing?
In all honesty, it doesn’t matter to the true bigots. They are committed to their narrative regardless of the evidence, the arguments, and the outcome. Anyone who disagrees is decried as a right-wing bigot.
Hey, why don’t we try something different? Why don’t we stop calling each other names and labels, stop dismissing each other as right-wingers/left-wingers/bigots/commies, and actually engage with the substance of the arguments?
Nah. That’s not going to happen. In my experience, no such argument is necessary. If you upset them, you’re already in the wrong. Usually because you’re on ‘The Right’.
